COUNTDOWN to 2008... Overnight Chanting and Blessings

It's time to bid goodbye to 2007 and welcome 2008!

In keeping with tradition, we once again organised an Overnight Chanting session to usher in 2008 in Wat Ananda Metyarama Buddhist Temple.

Devotees gathered in the main shrine at 11pm to chant the Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta ("Turning of the Wheel" Discourse), led by Venerable Chao Khun and the Sangha members.  In this Sutta, Lord Buddha taught the 5 ascetics that the way to Enlightenment lies in practising the Middle Way, which is the Noble Eightfold Path.  He expounded on the elements that constitute this Noble Eightfold Path and on the Four Noble Truths.  As we chanted this Sutta, we are reminded of the invaluable and timeless teachings of Lord Buddha before the new year begins.

At 12am sharp, 1 Jan 2008, we could hear boisterous fireworks which were fired around the Marina Bay area.  In the main shrine, the Sangha members chanted blessings for all those who were present while, outside the shrine, at one corner of the temple premises, we could see the spectacular fireworks lighting up the dark sky.

With that, the crowd adjourned to the meditation hall to start the marathon-like overnight chanting.  We paid Homage to the Triple Gem by chanting 108 times "Salutation to the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha" throughout the whole night.  It was really a challenge for the participants to keep themselves awake till 7am.  Light refreshments were provided by well-wishers and the participants were divided into two groups so that they could take turns to take short rest if needed.

Finally, as dawn breaks, it was heartening to know that at least 50% of the participants managed to stay awake and chant throughout the night.  To end the programme, the participants stayed to offer dana of food and other requisites to about 50 Sangha members.   Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!   May all Dhamma Brothers and Sisters be blessed with good health and happiness in 2008!
