41 Years of Journey .. cum Opening of Dhamma Hall
You can’t possibly miss it.
Even from a distance, you
can just make out the chofah that
decorate its roof peeping above the HDB flats around it. As you approach the
main gate, if you happen to visit on a Sunday, you will hear the harmonious
chanting of Buddhist scriptures by children from its Sunday Dhamma class.
This is Wat Ananda Metyarama Buddhist Temple. You may not realize that, nestled amongst the blocks of public
housing in Bukit Merah, is a Buddhist temple older than the country herself.
Its founder, Venerable Luang Phor Hong Dhammaratano, landed in Singapore in 1920 and came up with the idea of a Thai temple
in 1923. The temple was completed 2 years later, and underwent numerous
renovations and expansions in subsequent years. In 1985, HRH Princess Maha
Chakri Sirindhorn, the 2nd daughter of King Bhumipbol Adulyadej of Thailand, officially declared the opening of its new
Pagoda.
On the 4 November 2007, another
significant event is taking place in the history of the temple. After months of
work, a new Dhamma hall has just been renovated, and the opening ceremony is
underway. Giving the opening address is Bro Jimmy Voon, current president of the
youth wing of the temple, for this day also marks the 41st anniversary
of the first and oldest registered Buddhist youth circle in Singapore. A year has passed since we were called WAY or Wat
Ananda Youth.
On this day, we recollected
the activities that we had organized for the past one year... We continue to
organize more networking sessions for young Buddhists, meditation and chanting
sessions, conduct chanting sessions at wakes (under ECG) and organize a Vesak
Community project to reach out to the elderly in the Bukit Merah area, and of
course, we renovated the Dhamma Hall! We
are grateful to many members and friends/well-wishers who help us to make this
renovation a reality.
With the completion of the
renovation, we are able to hold our weekly Sunday Services in the Dhamma
Hall. Also, we have a more spacious and
tidy place to hold the meditation and chanting sessions. We are also conducting the ABCs of Buddhism
in the Dhamma Hall, every Fri starting from 7 Dec 07. In the pipeline, we would also be conducting
the Basic Pali Chanting course from 6 Jan 08.
